Workshop Description:
The curriculum in Barbados at the primary level includes Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking, Drama, Social Studies, Civics, Mathematics, Science, HFLE, Physical Education, Music, Religious and Moral Education, and Visual arts. It also incorporates technology, coding and robotics. To promote and encourage seamless learning among these subjects, the following will be addressed in the workshop:
- An overview of theories and models of curriculum integration
- Benefits and challenges of curriculum integration
- Planning for integration
- Strategies for effective implementation of integrated curriculum
- Assessment and evaluation
- Challenges and solutions
- Strategies for sustained curriculum integration efforts
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the workshop participants should be able to:
- Outline theories and models of curriculum integration appropriate to context
- Devise culturally relevant action plans for integration within existing curricula
- Create graphical organisers demonstrating integration – curriculum and thematic webs
- Formulate learning outcomes for integrated units
- Develop integrated lesson plans and accompanying learning activities
- Design appropriate assessment and evaluation activities to facilitate integration
- Identify strategies for dealing with challenges to integration and ensure the sustainability of integration within the curriculum
