Foundational Concepts in Mathematics – Number Bonds & Number Sense

TOPIC: Foundational Concepts in Mathematics – Number Bonds & Number Sense

DURATION: 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (4 hours)

FACILITATOR: Mr. John Shepherd

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:

This workshop is designed to equip teachers with designing appropriate methods and practical strategies for helping students in the primary school to develop conceptual understanding of numbers. The workshop will provide the necessary tools for teachers to confidently introduce and teach number bonds and number sense, which will assist with the four basic arithmetic operations. A more targeted instruction on number bonds and number sense will empower students to approach mathematical studies with greater confidence.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the workshop participants should be able to:

  • Develop a conceptual understanding of numbers, number bonds and number sense.
  • Develop an appreciation for the theoretical foundations of contemporary mathematics education and their implications for teaching number bonds and number sense.
  • Devise and implement the appropriate instructional strategies to introduce number bonds and assist students in using their number sense.
  • Recognize the importance of number bonds in basic number concepts such as place value, ratio, percentages, decimals etc.
  • Develop an understanding of the importance of mental math skills in the development of early number concepts.
  • Discuss and design instruments for assessing students’ understanding of number related concepts.

TARGET GROUP: Teachers of mathematics in the primary school and junior secondary school level.
