WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION: 

Fractions remain one topic that causes issues for students and teachers alike. Even as we move towards a change in the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination, students must be able to handle this tricky subject, which not only includes simple fractions, but their equivalent counterparts, decimals, percentages and ratios. In this workshop we will look at effective ways to introduce fractions, fundamental concepts needed to understand fractions, how to teach fraction operations without relying heavily on procedural memorisation, and tackling fraction word problems

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

By the end of the session Teachers should be equipped to:

  • Introduce fractions conceptually
  • Use a research driven method for understanding fraction equivalence
  • Develop students conceptual understanding of fraction operations
  • Apply Bar Modelling to help students tackle fraction word problems
