WORKSHOP TITLE: Hidden Clues: The Science of Behavior, Well-Being, and Early Risk Signs in the Primary Classroom
FACILITATOR: Rosanne Waldron
DURATION: 1 Day Workshop (4–5 hours)
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:
This interactive, inquiry-based workshop equips primary teachers to understand the science behind student behavior and well-being in the classroom. In the Barbadian context, this is critical as schools play a key role in supporting children amid increasing social stressors, mental health concerns, and early risk behaviors. The workshop aligns with national priorities for student well-being, safe school environments, and preventative education. Through hands-on activities, case- studies, and collaborative learning, participants explore how behavioral changes are linked to biological, environmental, and social factors, enabling teachers to respond appropriately, work with support services, and foster resilient, healthy learners.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Apply science process skills, particularly observation and inference, to identify patterns in student behavior.
- Explain basic scientific concepts related to the brain and nervous system and how these influence behaviors.
- Identify early warning signs that may indicate concerns related to student well-being, including possible substance exposure.
- Differentiate between multiple causes of behavioral changes, avoiding assumptions and bias.
- Demonstrate appropriate teacher responses, including documentation, communication, and referral procedures.
- Design strategies to promote a healthy, safe, and supportive classroom environment
TARGET PARTICIPANTS:
Primary school teachers, Student teachers (Early Childhood & Primary)
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Participants are required to bring a laptop or any other type of electronic device. The workshop facilitator will provide all other materials.
