TOPIC: Realizing the Power of Social Studies: Effective Lesson Planning, Writing Facts, Concepts and Generalization

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION:     

This workshop will seek to improve instructional practices in the teaching of Social Studies. Participants will adopt a systematic approach to the sequencing and scaffolding of their lesson plans in order to achieve better student outcomes. Different approaches will be examined, to build participants’ repertoire of strategies and methodologies for successful instruction. Particular attention will be placed on the writing of Facts, Concepts, and Generalizations as these are extremely important to students' understanding, connecting, and building an awareness of the world in which they live. The goal, therefore, is to develop skilled professionals who can teach age-appropriate well planned Social Studies lessons to different levels of learners.

  • Examine the structure of a lesson plan for Social Studies
  • Discuss strategies used in the teaching of Social Studies
  • Discuss the importance of facts, concepts, and generalizations
  • Apply different assessment strategies to lesson planning for Social Studies
  • Formulate appropriate lesson plans and activities for learners in varied environments
